Hot Heels Africa Day 3 and 4
The first round of practice went smoothly on day 3. In the second round though, a camera man was taken out by Vito Torente when he crashed at exit of Lloyds Left. Vito was trying to avoid others who had crashed in front of him and went off the road on the inside of the corner. The camera man had to be taken to hospital for his injuries so there was about an hour of no skating while there was no ambulance on the hill. This gave the IDF time to fix some issues with the timing system so that the top 15 shoot out could be run smoothly.
For the Shoot Out, the top 15 qualifiers were sent down the hill one at time for a last chance to prove who is fastest on the hill. R1000 cash up for grabs was the incentive. Local legend and reigning Hot Heels Africa champ Decio Lourenco was fastest by almost 2 seconds!
Day 4 Race Day!
Well Done to Kyle Westers for taking the overall win! That’s a hat trick for Kyle in SA now since he won at Plett Downhill Rage and the Uitsig Outlaw over the last two weekends. Decio was not far behind Kyle. Jason Brown took third and Simon Sturrock fourth. With three saffas in the final, it must have been the most South African Final in World Cup history! So we can all be stoked about that! Downhill Skating SA got a video of the finals from the finsh line. Watch it here.
Joey Marcus has had a blinder of a season, placing fourth overall (against the opens) in Fridays Time Trials, taking a convincing win in the Junior 2 category at Hot Heels and consequently the SA Champ title for Junior 2s.
Matthew Swanepoel won the Junior 1 category.
Marie Bougourd “Spoky Woky” from France took the win for the ladies in a super tight final. Unfortunately Gabi went down in Lloyds Left and broke her finger. Wishing you a speedy recovery Gabi! Watch the video of the ladies final on Clever Groms Instagram.
Anton Pratt won the Masters Category.
Glen Phillips won luge.
